The heat index is a measure of relative discomfort due to the combination of heat and high humidity. The index was developed in 1979 and is based on physiological studies of evaporative skin cooling for various combinations of ambient (actual) air temperature and humidity.

Heat index temperatures of 80 F or greater are generally associated with some discomfort. Heat index values approaching or exceeding 105 F are considered life threatening, with severe heat exhaustion or heat stroke possible if exposure is prolonged or physical activity is high. Obviously, the extent of possible heat stress varies with age, health and other body characteristics.
